Baptism Electrocution Lawsuit Settled by Surviving Family

The family of a Pastor who was electrocuted while performing a baptism in front of 800 churchgoers has settled a wrongful death lawsuit against an electrical contractor.

Neither the family, nor the contractor would release the settlement terms and compensation for the death of Reverend Kyle Lake, 33, at Waco’s University Baptist Church.

The Lawsuit

Lake’s family – his widow, Jennifer Lake; and his parents, David and Shirley Lake – filed the lawsuit on Kyle Lake’s behalf against MP Electric Inc. Of Waco, Texas. They sought unspecified damages on behalf of the reverend’s widow and their three children.

The lawsuit claimed that MP Electric was negligent in the design, assembly, and installation of the church’s heaters. Their negligence resulted in the electrocution and death of Kyle Lake, the suit claimed.

Regarding the settlement, James W. Grau, an attorney for MP Electric Inc., said, “As a company and a long-standing member of the community, MP Electric is pleased that they could come to a financial resolution with the lake family.”

The Lakes’ attorney, Stephen Crain, said, “With this settlement, the family is grateful to put this part of the process behind them.”

The Electrocution

According to the lawsuit, in October 2005, both of the church bapistry’s heaters overheated before Lake’s death. This seriously damaged the heater and exposed some of its highly charged electrical components to contact with the water passing through the heater’s pipes.

According to the suit, once the bapistry was filled with water, an electric current passed through it creating “an invisible but fatal hazard for anyone entering in the bapistry.”

Lake had a microphone in hand as he stepped into the water and got electrocuted. He cried for help as he fell into it, the suit said. A witness unplugged the microphone, but it appeared to be too late. Lake was taken to the hospital, where he died later that same day.
