Study Reveals Hormone Treatments are Unsafe

A recently released federal study, the Women's Health Initiative, confirm the existence of a breast cancer risk presented by hormonal therapies for menopause symptoms — as was first indicated in 2002. The findings were the result of the tracking of more than 15,300 women who were taking the most commonly prescribed hormonal treatment: Prempro, a combination of estrogen and progestin.

The study reveals Prempro and other hormonal treatments are unsafe products that can be linked to the development of serious injuries such as breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Linked to Hormone Therapy

The study's results were presented Dec. 13 at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium. Dr. Rowan Chlebowski, the study's lead author, stated at the symposium that it is now confirmed that the rate of breast cancer in the U.S. plunged in recent years mainly because so many women discontinued their hormone therapy after 2002, and because many newly menopausal women declined to begin hormone therapy after the earlier findings were released.

Health Benefits Were Illusion

Together, the two parts of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) end any doubt that the risks of hormone therapy outweigh their benefits for most women. Hormone therapy was initially recommended as a way to:

  • Treat hot flashes and other hormonal symptoms
  • Prevent bone loss, heart disease and several other medical problems in post-menopausal women.

Lowest Possible Dose for Shortest Possible Time, If At All

However, the initial results of the WHI indicated higher risks of heart problems and breast cancer in women treated with hormones. Those findings caused the discontinuation of the main part of the study in 2002; women and their physicians were then advised to consider hormone therapy only for the most severe symptoms of menopause, and to use hormones at the lowest dose and for the shortest time possible.
