LA County Settles $890,000 Medical Malpractice Suit

Los Angeles County has agreed to settle a medical malpractice lawsuit filed by a man who alleged he received poor treatment for a spinal cord injury at USC Medical Center.

The man will receive $890,000 compensation for his losses and suffering.

Robert Maurer, 35, suffered an injury in 2004 when his bicycle ran into a car. Maurer could not move his legs and complained of weakness in his hands.

He was rushed to USC Medical Center where doctors failed to bring in a neurology or neurosurgery specialists to check Maurer's injuries. He was released shortly without any clinic appointments or medications.

A little over a week later, Maurer was taken to a Phoenix hospital where doctors learned he had suffered a serious cervical spinal cord compression. Maurer had neck surgery to ease the compression and relieve him of some pain.

Maurer now resides in a supervised nursing facility and is only able to walk short distances with the help of a walker, the lawsuit said.

According to a county counsel memo, the doctors at USC Medical Center failed to “fully evaluate and treat” Maurer prior to discharging him. The hospital's conduct “fell below the standard of care, and contributed to Mr. Maurer's current neurological status.”
