L.A. Teen Still in Critical Condition Following Hit-and-Run Accident

Macro Ledesma, a 19-year old resident of Los Angeles, remains in critical condition after being hit by a car while walking across the street this past Tuesday.

On December 30, 2008, Ledesma was walking across a major intersection in Paso Robles (a town in San Luis Obispo) when he was hit and critically injured by a motorist.

After responding to Ledesma's injuries, local authorities followed up on witness reports in an effort to locate the individual suspected of hitting Ledesma and fleeing the scene of the crime. Within hours, area police found a BMW with damage indicating that the car had recently been involved in an accident and injured a person.

Richard Wideman, the 40-year old owner of the car, was subsequently arrested and charged with felony hit-and-run and felony DUI. If convicted, Wideman can face thousands of dollars of fines and several years in a California state prison.

After the Criminal Case: A Personal Injury Suit Against Wideman

While Wideman will soon face a criminal trial for his role in critically injuring Ledesma, following the end of this case, Ledesma (and his family) will have the opportunity to pursue a civil personal injury lawsuit against Wideman.

Given that Wideman was allegedly intoxicated at the time of the crash, and that Wideman failed to stop and help Ledesma, as a plaintiff, Ledesma has a legal claim that Wideman's wrecklessness and negligence caused him intense personal injury for which he deserves compensation.

By pursuing a personal injury lawsuit following the criminal trial, Ledesma will have the opportunity to win money he needs to pay for:

  • living costs (especially if his injuries prevent him from temporarily or permanently being able to earn a living)
  • past medical bills
  • future medical treatments (particularly if his injuries cause permanent physical impairments).

To encourage any victim of a hit-and-run accident to pursue his legal claim, most lawyers offer free consultations and will delay payment for their services until the case is won.
