Another fatal mining disaster struck the US yesterday when a roof collapsed in a coalmine, killing one miner.  The mine was located in Kentucky the accident comes just a week after 11 miners were killed in the Sago Mine in West Virginia.

The miner who died was killed by a falling rock at a depth of about 900 feet.  The miner was identified as Cornelius Yates, 44, a resident of Shelbiana in Pike County Kentucky.   Yates was using a roof-bolting machine on the roof of the mine when a section collapsed on him.  The US Mine Safety and Health Administration stated that several federal level investigators were already on the scene and starting their inquiries.

The Sago Mine tragedy has sparked a nationwide outrage over safety conditions in the nation’s mines, and this latest death has many wondering when new precautions are going to be put into place.  The Sago Mine had over 200 violations in 2004, three times the national mine safety record average.
