Roller Shoes to Blame for Worldwide Injuries

Roller Shoes to Blame for Worldwide Injuries

The popular roller shoes that send kids flying down sidewalks and through parks are reportedly far riskier than consumers and manufacturers previously thought.

This unsafe product that targets children, features removable wheels that pop out of each heel when weight is shifted.

Heelys, the most widely used brand of roller skates, are manufactured by Carrollton, Texas based Heelys, Inc., and are sold to nearly 70 countries worldwide.

The Statistics

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 1, 600 children paid visits to the hospital due to the shoes this past year, one of the visits even resulting in a death.

At a hospital in Dublin, Ireland 67 children were brought in within a ten-week period last summer due to roller shoe related injuries.

More reports from around the world have been brought to both manufacturers and consumer’s attention because of cracked skulls, broken wrists, arms and ankles, and dislocated elbows in kids wearing the shoes.

What Is Being Done?

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recently posted new safety guidelines for those wearing roller shoes online.

Included in these guidelines are recommendations for children to wear helmets, wrist protectors, and knee and elbow pads when skating about town.
