Sexual Abuse Rampant in Military

Sexual Abuse Rampant in Military

A recent congressional study released data that showed some 60 percent of women and 27 percent of men in the military reserves and National Guard were victims of sexual abuse, assault, or harassment during their service.  The study's shocking findings opened the door for serious investigations and potential legal claims arising from the abuse.

More than half of the cases took place on a military work site and occurred during working hours.  Eleven percent of the women reported rape or attempted rape. Most cases showed that military personnel were responsible for the sexual abuse as well.  The reports of abuse prompted the Pentagon to enact policies that help military personnel overcome the long-lasting effects of sexual abuse.

The costs associated with abuse care could cost the American taxpayers $900 million dollars over a 10 year period.  The findings were based on phone interviews that took place in 2002 and 2003 with former reservists.
