Should Safety Be an Option on Thrill Rides?

Safety and amusement park rides have always been in question and with more and more accidents occurring, Americans are growing increasingly worried about whether any regulations are being enforced.

According to reports, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has no full-time employees who ensure the safety of amusement park rides.

Instead, the agency has 90 field investigators who oversee 15,000 various products and supposedly work from their homes, which are mostly located on the East Coast.

These workers are reportedly so overstretched that they typically don't even arrive to the scene of an amusement park accident until after the ride has been fully dismantled.

Reported Accidents on the Sizzler

In 2005, a 9-year-old girl who was riding a Sizzler ride at a carnival in Austin, TX., slipped beneath the lap bar and was thrown on the ride's platform, where her head was instantly crushed.

Reports claim that the Sizzler has been the cause for at least four deaths and several injuries since 1997.

In June, state inspection chiefs requested that the manufacturer's of the ride, Wisdom Industries, immediately take action to prevent an “unacceptable level of ejection” on the ride.

CPSC Fails to Take Proper Action

The CPSC has allegedly not taken any action to regulate the safety of rides by Wisdom or several other manufacturers in at least eight years.

The agency has reportedly asked that Wisdom and ride operators for the Sizzler “pay greater attention to safety.”

"It makes me sick that the taxes we pay don't go toward more safety regulations. I don't think the manufacturers understand, either. If something had happened to one of their children or grandchildren, it would be different," says Cretia Lewis, the mother of a boy who was injured when his lap bar malfunctioned at a county fair in Kentucky.
