Woman Sues Ob/Gyn, Hospital Over Medical Errors

A Maryland woman is suing her gynecologist and Sinai Hospital for medical malpractice, alleging that sponges, gauze, and other materials were left inside her abdomen after an operation more than six years ago.

LaShawn McClary, 40, underwent surgery in January 2001 to have a benign tumor removed from her uterus. Last week, she filed a lawsuit against Dr. Sheo P. Sharma and the hospital staff accusing them of negligence for failing to remove various materials used during the procedure.

According to her lawsuit, the materials were found during an exploratory surgery two months ago, when doctors also discovered that the tumor had not been completely removed.

Medical reports from her initial procedure said that all materials had been removed and accounted for, which misled other doctors who subsequently treated McClary.

She claims that as a result of medical negligence, she suffered damage to her bowels, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. She is seeking $5 million in damages.
